For Edmonton, moving McDavid in his prime while still a Cup contender is a massive strategic pivot that is only partially offset by adding a 51-goal winger in his mid-20s on a long deal (Caufield), a young top-four D with term (Guhle), a middle-six winger with term (Bolduc), an expiring middle-six C/RW (Dach), and three Montréal firsts that are likely mid-to-late in the round if the Canadiens remain strong, making this more of a deep retool package than true franchise-player value replacement.
Even with a very strong return, trading a 29-year-old Connor McDavid with another year of control from a recent Cup finalist is far outside current NHL norms, and Edmonton’s competitive window and market realities make this highly unrealistic despite the haul. Montréal’s side is aggressive but plausible if they are confident in an extension, whereas Edmonton would almost certainly require an even more overwhelming, franchise-altering offer or an off-ice forcing mechanism to consider it.
